- Music improves spatial-temporal reasoning (See the M.I.N.D. Institute research), a neurological process needed to understand mathematics. The best way to enhance your child's learning with music is to encourage listening to and learning music throughout the child's developmental years. - Music training imposes a high working-memory load. That can be a good thing, in that it helps you expand your working memory capacity, and thus reduces the impairing effects on memory of working memory overload. Increasing working memory capacity also improves the ability to think, as manifest in IQ scores.
- Music show improvements in auditory verbal memory and auditory attention
- She(Nina Kraus, a prominent brain researcher at Northwestern University) believes music training may benefit academic achievement by improving learning skills and listening ability, especially in challenging listening environments (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/memory-medic/201007/music-training-helps-learning-memory)
- It is a proven fact that music has helped to educate students. For example some kindergarten teachers use musical rhymes to teach their children how to write, and how to learn the alphabet. The reason behind this is because it helps the child to retain the information better than without the rhymes or music. I understand that english, math, and reading are more important when it comes to getting an educaion, but when I child learns to play an instrument or learns to sing, they are becoming wello rounded individuals.
Once I am a teacher I am going to incorporate music into my lessons, not every single lesson but into at least once a week or maybe even once a day, I will have music in my classroom.
If music works to help with tests, why not use it?
I think that music needs to remain in school districts. It gives the school are more well-rounded atmosphere and helps to provide for theh diversity in the school. Students need a variety of options if you want them to be happy. Likewise, if you want success amoungst the students, they need to be happy. I agree 100% that music helps with tests, and you gave great proof. Hopefully they reconsider taking music out of schools because of the amount that it helps the students and the disrict as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI agree that music should be kept in the schools. Research shows that music helps students do better in math and science as well. Babies are given music to listen to because it stimulates brain activity. It gives students ways to show creativity and also gives some students an outlet they wouldn't otherwise have. It's good that you want to incorporate music into your lessons. If nothing else, a catchy song helps students remember information that may otherwise be difficult to memorize. Well done!
ReplyDeleteLike the ABCs. The catchy music helps the studens remember the ABCs. I agree that music is a great outlet to their problems. Children who play an instrument can put all the problems into playing the music. Even this will help students do better on tests. They will be less distracted with personal problems because they were able to release their feelings in a constructive way, rather than fighting or drugs for instance. I hope they do chose to keep music in schools. I dont know what I would have done without music throughout high school.
ReplyDeleteMusic should stay in the school systems. I love music. Music keeps me motivated and also can keep a student motivated. I will like to meet the person who want to take away music in the school systems. Whoever the person is he/she or they are crazy. As a future teacher I will like to be a math teacher who teach through the music environment. Music can express a students learning ability. Thanks for bringing this topic to my attention because they are fools for trying to take away music in the schools. Nice job Tausha
ReplyDeleteMy youngest daughter is working on a science fair project on Math and music. I shared your blog. One of the things I want to talk about is music an education in our class. Your links and your insight is valuable. Keep the music.
ReplyDeleteMusic should stay in schools. I know that with out orchestra I would never had made some of the great friends I have today. The friends i made through music are always there for you. Without music some student would be lost and not meet some great people.
ReplyDeleteI do not know what I would have done without music in high school. All of the friends I made, and still have, were involved in music. I hope that the "important people" of the districts, who make all the decisions, realize how much music means to the children (and adults) who are apart of something beyond themselves.
